New Rusk Sheriff Making Progress

A surprise winner in last year's Rusk County Sheriff's race is making and impression on his new department. Three months into the job, Glen Deason is putting his mark on the Rusk County Sheriff's office.

"We've made some changes got some things going, we're taking it one day at a time," says Sheriff. Deason.  He's made immediate changes on all levels, even incorporating a Mexican five peso piece into the new badge. He also moved from a spacious office to a small one, so he could be closer to his deputies. He says his biggest strength is listening to to his personnel, letting his officers tell him what they need, knowing what the backbone of his operation is.

"From the patrol deputies to criminal investigations division, to jailers to clerical, you can't do it by yourself, and I've got a great bunch of people here," Deason says.

His main campaign promise was that he would aggressively go after drug users and suppliers.  It's a promise he's kept, making seven drug arrests in the last week, and knowing to make a dent in a seemingly endless problem, you have to go after it everywhere.

"It's always going to be a problem, and we have to do what we can to put a dent in it" says Deason. Deason hopes his hands-on style is what people elected him for.
