When Pope Francis addressed the joint session of Congress Thursday, he is the first ever to do so. In the audience was East Texas U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert. Gohmert spoke with KLTV today about the pope's message.

"I thought it was wonderful that he came to Washington D.C.. There have been many popes that have been invited and Pope Francis actually came. That was quite a statement in and of itself. I thought the speech was good. In fact, I got a question from people over at the house floor just now saying 'Do you want to come over for a floor speech?' and I said, 'I don't think I want to follow the pope.'"

During his address, Pope Francis did not shy away from controversial topics, including immigration, calling on Congress to embrace immigrants in the United States.

"He is such a smart man. I doubt that he knows that we allow more people to come in than anywhere else in the world, and we allow more people to settle here permanently than anywhere else in the world."

Gohmert said he has been impressed by the Pope's actions while in the United States, specifically highlighting his visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor, an organization of catholic nuns.
