Preliminary autopsy report released in death of 2-year-old Gregg Co. girl

A Gregg County child died on Monday, and her cause of death is being investigated.

Southwestern Instituted of Forensic Sciences in Dallas performed the autopsy. The preliminary report obtained on Wednesday shows that the child's death is still under investigation, and toxicology results are still pending.

According to Judge B.H. Jameson, the toddler has been identified as 2-year-old Ariyana Gonzales. She was found in an apartment and pronounced dead around 2 p.m. Monday.

Longview police were dispatched to an Assist-EMS call in the 2500 Block of North Eastman Road. When officers arrived, they were told a child had been playing with a loaded firearm. According to police, the firearm accidentally discharged, hitting Gonzales. However, the final, actual cause of death has still not been declared, and is still under investigation.

The toddler died at the scene. Jameson says although Gonzales did suffer a head wound, it has not officially been ruled as the result of a gunshot.

Jameson adds that several guns were taken from the residence following the shooting. Final autopsy results are still pending, due to the investigation.

Officer Kristie Brian says no arrests have been made, and that it's too early in the investigation to say if any charges will be filed.
