Horses Found Starving In Winona

The Smith County Sheriffs Department has rescued sixteen horses, all living on less than two acres of land near Winona.

According to authorities many were starving and suffering from malnutrition. Smith county deputies say the horses were living in the pasture in a rural area just north of Winona. The horses have now been taken in by several different horse rescue groups, including one in Upshur County called "Safe Haven".

Workers there say they can't imagine how the animals got into the condition they are in. No charges have been filed yet against the horses owner. All of the horses are expected to survive.
