LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

The Longview Fire Marshal's Office is investigating after a Monday morning fire damaged a residence.

Crews were called about 9:40 a.m. to a fire in the 500 block of Evelyn Drive. Officials say a duplex caught on fire when a child in the residence was playing with a lighter and caught some papers on fire. One side received heavy fire damage and the other side received no damage. Two children were home in the residence where the fire began and officials say no one was home in the other residence. Officials say the children were waiting for their grandmother to pick them up when the fire started in the back bedroom.

The fire spread to the attic but was extinguished before spreading to the adjoining unit. By 10 a.m., the flames were out. The road was closed temporarily while crews work. Authorities say the burned side of the duplex is unlivable.
