Two Arrested In Longview Drunk Driving Fatals

A horrible day of tragedy began at 4 Saturday afternoon as two vehicles hit head-on at Loop 281 near Gilmer road. Mildred English, 80, of Longview was killed. The driver of the truck that caused the accident, 48-year-old Bruce Douglas was arrested. At 7:30 PM, a driver runs a red light causing  another head-on crash at Highway 80 and Fisher Road. Two people were killed and four others were sent to the hospital. The driver of the truck causing the accident was  47-year-old Jamie Coker. He was arrested. The link?

"The connection between the two of them was intoxicated drivers. Not just driving while your intoxicated but when coupled with the time of day, restricted visibility we had last night, slick streets, and all that worked together to make it a particularly tragic day," Investigating Officer Sergeant Richard Spruiell of the Longview Police Department said.

Coker was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter, and three counts of intoxication assault. Jail records show he had been arrested numerous times for public intoxication and drug possession. His wife, 37-year-old Sonya Coker, was killed as well as 80-year-old Martha Wallace. Douglas was charged with intoxication manslaughter. He also had a history of arrest, and police say both men displayed the signs of being under the influence.

"Bloodshot eyes difficulty walking cognitive problems, where am i what time is it" Spruiell says.

Police say these accident scenes are frightening proof that drunk driving kills. Douglas' bond was set at 50 thousand dollars, while Coker's was set at 95thousand.
