Get rid of pesky library fines, feed hungry kids at the same time

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Anyone out there procrastinate sometimes? Or perhaps you just found a library book you'd lost, and now you probably owe major fines? The Tyler library in conjunction with the East Texas Food Bank has a proposal for you that helps everyone involved.

Here's what they 're offering:

Just cleaned under your kid's bed and discovered a book checked out last summer? Did your joy at finding the long-lost book fade as you thought of the fine accrued over the months? Would you like to reduce those fines AND do a good deed at the same time?

Here's your chance! With a can of tuna or box of macaroni and cheese, you can return that library book without needing a second mortgage and help feed the hungry at the same time.Bring in “Food for Fines” to the Tyler Public Library from June 21 – July 2, 2015. During this period patrons can donate one nonperishable food item in exchange for each dollar owed in overdue fines. All food donated during this drive will be given to the East Texas Food Bank for distribution to those in need in our community. Canned or dry good items the Library will accept include soup, vegetables, fruit, gelatin, pudding, macaroni, rice, peanut butter, cereal, etc. We are unable to accept home-canned goods. Please do not bring opened food items, items whose expiration date has passed, or items in glass containers.

Patrons are asked to take all food items to the circulation desk so that library staff can credit their accounts. Donations MUST NOT be placed in book drop-off areas.

The Food for Fines program is valid June 21 – July 2 only. There is no limit to the amount of fines waived or the quantity of materials returned. This offer does not apply to replacement costs for lost or damaged library materials. Lost or damaged items must be paid for so that replacement items can be purchased.
