Commissioners Meet About Trash Problem

We're continuing to get e-mails and calls from viewers about illegal dumping and littering. We started looking at the problem two weeks ago in our special reports called "Trashing East Texas."

We discovered funding and bookkeeping problems in Smith County, involving the Commissioners Court and Environmental Investigator, Danny Brasher. Brasher told us he couldn't afford to patrol the county looking for littering problems because he wasn't receiving needed funds from the Commissioners Court.

Today, the court, Brasher, and his supervisor, Constable Frank Creath, met behind closed doors in executive session. We talked to Creath afterward, who said the commissioners now have a better idea of what Brasher does, which should help prevent past funding issues from happening again.

"What that was is that was a communication problem," Creath said. "It was a paperwork problem. It was a logistical problem. We got that worked out and I don't think there will be any more problems on it."

Constable Creath says he and Brasher did not discuss any increase in funding to the litter abatement program. Right now, Brasher is the only person investigating cases.
