UT Tyler softball ready for trip to Salem

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - After three successful weeks on their home field, the UT Tyler softball team is headed to the Division III National Championship Tournament.  The Patriots hosted the ASC Tournament as well as the NCAA Regional and Super Regional.  Now the team travels to Salem, Virginia.

"I just thought about it the other day thinking that was our last home game of the season," said junior Jackie Mendez.  "Going into it we knew we wanted to finish our season in Salem so it's even more exciting to know we're about to take a plane to get there."

With a 47-3 record, the Patriots have left the state of Texas just once this season.

"The advantage is getting to play a lot here," said head coach Mike Reed.  "The disadvantage is we're going to handle traveling for the first time, especially on an airplane. But it's exciting and it's something new. They'll be excited just to go somewhere different and a different stage. We're looking forward to the travel and getting to play somewhere else."

The Patriots leave for Salem Tuesday morning.  They will open National Championship tournament play on Thursday morning against Kean.
