Veterans Home May Come To East Texas

A veteran nursing home and retirement center may be coming to East Texas. UT Health Center has offered to donate 20 acres of land to build the new center.

The veteran home would be paid for by federal and state funds. The department of Veterans Affairs and the state would operate the home but UT Health Center would provide medical services and food services.

Texas Land Commisoner Jerry Patterson was in Tyler today looking at the property, and says Tyler is a great spot for this home.

"We're looking at areas where there are significant vet populations. This area is one of them. Tyler is very high on the list," says Commisoner Patterson.

More than 17,000 veterans live in Smith County, with another 43,000 living in bordering counties, according to federal statistics.
