February begins the month long celebration of African-American contributions to the nation's culture. The Smith County Historical Society is celebrating the contributions of African-American pioneers in East Texas history. Over the next month, the society is showing an exhibit featuring some of the early black settlers of Smith County.
The exhibit includes pictures of the first black educators, doctors and entrepreneurs in the area. The exhibit runs through February at the Smith County Historical Society on College Street in downtown Tyler. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
