Lawmaker says if overtime funding denied for troopers, security could suffer

An East Texas lawmaker says if overtime funding for troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety is not approved in budgeting, security could suffer at home and on the border.

Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler, said he voted against a preliminary budget because it did not provide adequate overtime funding for DPS troopers. He said the troopers are being funded overtime for use on the border, but overtime for troopers taking their spot in their home districts expired in August.

The House version of the budget passed without the overtime funding for non-border troopers. Schaefer said it is possible for the Senate to add that funding in to their version of the budget.

Schaefer said if the overtime is not budgeted, it will be up to DPS districts to work with the regular funding to staff their areas.
