Proud of East Texas: Spirits of Oakwood

EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

At the "Spirits of Oakwood" event, scheduled for Saturday, March 28, you probably won't meet any ghosts, but you will step back in time as their stories unfold.

This is the eleventh year for the event, sponsored by the Oakwood Cemetery Restoration Committee. Oakwood Cemetery is Tyler's oldest cemetery and one of the most historic cemeteries in Texas.

Texas Governor Richard Hubbard is buried at Oakwood, along with other government officials. Over two hundred Confederate soldiers claim the cemetery as their last resting place and the cemetery is a treasure trove of art and history, with many markers dating back into the 1800's.

Tickets for the "Spirits of Oakwood" event are ten dollars and available at the Oakwood gate on Ellis Street the day of the event. Proceeds are used for cemetery restoration.
