East Texas Family Reaches Out

She requires nearly around the clock care, and now, due to her age, one East Texas girl is in jeopardy of losing that care.

20-year-old Samantha McNeely has been confined to her bed at her family's home near Gilmer for most of her life. Samantha was born severely mentally handicapped and faces numerous other health problems, including frequent bouts with pneumonia.

Until now, the McNeely's have depended on money from the federally funded Medicaid program to pay for her care. Next month, when Samantha turns 21, she'll lose nearly all of that assistance. Her mother said they are running out of options.

"There are just no programs for children after they reach 21, because usually when a child is this sick they don't survive to be 21," said Claudia McNeely, Samantha's mother. "It's my life. I've been through 13-14 years, this is just part of my life now."

In the past, Claudia has even gone as far as setting up a page on the popular auction site "Ebay", hoping to attract donations. She's also looking into other state and federally funded programs, which she hopes will help in the care of her daughter.
