Black Bears In East Texas

An animal that was hunted to near extinction 60 years ago is making a comeback in East Texas, but you don't want to make a pet out of this one. Black bears were "re-introduced" to Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma decades ago, but are now ranging back into East Texas. Two sightings have been made in Cass and Wood counties over the past 3 years as the bears begin to extend their territory.

Game wardens say the bears are commonly sighted in Marion, Harrison, Panola and Shelby counties. Black bears can grow to up to 400 pounds and range from 4 to 6 feet in length. They are wild animals who should not be approached, and because they are endangered, killing one is against the law.
