Senate Panel Poised To Approve Rice As Secretary Of State

Secretary of State-designate Condoleezza Rice is refusing to even venture a guess on when U-S troops will leave Iraq.

But she did promise the Senate Foreign Relations Committee a prompt review of U-S policy after Iraq's elections at the end of the. Rice says any timetable for a U-S withdrawal will depend on Iraq's ability to defend itself.

Rice, who has been serving as the president's National Security Adviser, appears this morning for a second day of questioning. It's expected the committee will approve her nomination later today, sending it to the full Senate.

Rice should be a shoo-in to succeed Colin Powell despite concerns among many Democrats about the reasons given for going to war in Iraq. Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar hopes for a vote tomorrow, right after the president's inauguration.
