East Texas Relief Group Helping In Sri Lanka

A group of East Texas men are adding to the relief effort in South Asia. Fourteen members of the "East Texas Disaster Relief Team" are on the ground in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.

The group left East Texas last week for what they knew would be a grueling trip. After 30 hours on a plane, they landed in Sri Lanka. It took another 10 hours by bus to get to their present location on the Eastern coast of the island.

The East Texans join other members of the "Texas Baptist Men", there are 60 Texans in all. Since arriving they have been doing all they can to help, clearing debris and helping those injured.

We spoke with the team's leader Tuesday who said their main job has been helping get clean water to the community.

"We've got generators, we've bought pumps we're pumping the wells out completely, we're treating them and as the water comes back in that water is usable and those people are truly amazed at how that process works," said team leader Mike Brittain.

"The people that have had that done are excited, there is also a group of people standing around saying would you please do my well next," he said.

"The group has been able to clean around five wells each day. The "East Texas Disaster Relief Team" plans to stay another week and a half before coming home.
