Big 12 & SEC battle over East Texas talent

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The battle was on between Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech for the top East Texas talent.  Gilmer's Kris Boyd is one of the top rated defensive backs in the country. Boyd chose the Texas Longhorns in a tight race over Texas A&M.

"I've been stressing over it and thinking about it," said Boyd.  "But Coach (Charlie) Strong is a good coach and the coaching staff is good. He's known for defense, so why not go play for one of the best defensive coaches?"

The Aggies missed out on Boyd, but scored big in East Texas.  Adding to Daylon Mack, the Aggies signed Lufkin offensive lineman Erik McCoy.  The Aggies also added two defensive backs, Sulphur Springs star Larry Pryor Junior and Whitehouse star Justin Dunning.

"A lot of people wavered here and there when things bad were happening," said Dunning.  "But I stayed firm and believed in Coach (Kevin) Sumlin and what he was going to do for the program. It all turned out for the better."

Baylor also had a good day in East Texas. Arp defensive lineman Tyrone Hunt and Longview running back JaMycal Hasty are headed to the back to back Big 12 champions.

"Just the energy about the program," said Hasty.  "From the coaching staff to the players and everything around the new stadium. I just want to be apart of it."

Hasty's Lobo teammate Broderick Washington will head to Texas Tech to protect former Whitehouse star Patrick Mahomes.  Mahomes also gets another East Texas receiver, as Lufkin playmaker KeKe Coutee is a Red Raider.
