Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas Holds Broad Lead In Election

The results aren't final yet, but officials say Mahmoud Abbas has won 65 percent of the Palestinian presidential vote. That's with about two-thirds of the precincts counted.

Abbas' main challenger, independent candidate Mustafa Barghouti, won 21 percent.

Abbas has already declared victory, saying there's a "difficult mission" ahead to build a Palestinian state. He reiterated that he won't go after militants and pledges to give those wanted by Israel "a life of dignity."

He has promised to reform the Palestinian Authority, overhaul the Palestinian security services and quickly resume negotiations with Israel.

An Israeli official says a Palestinian crackdown on militants remains a pre-condition for any peace steps.
