Longview Group Rescues Dogs; Seek Homes

A Longview volunteer group is now in the process of trying to find good homes for some special dogs that were rescued from a shelter earlier this week. On any given Saturday you can catch volunteers with Longview's "pick of the litter" at Petco, doing what they do best finding homes for abandoned or stray animals.

"Dogs like a little puppy named Wally that you can see at Petco, are stray's that was dumped at one of the volunteers house for pick of the litter" says volunteer Darcell Cowles.

Thursday the group saved 9 adult dogs and several puppies from the humane society that would have been euthanized because of a distemper outbreak. And now the volunteers are already scouting for people who might make good owners. In the mean time the dogs stay with them.

"They stay in our homes they live with us until they find a home, lots of times you cry when you take them to a new home but you have to think well you're making room to save a life of something else" says pick of the litter volunteer Veta Clayton.

Already people have expressed interest in the dogs saved from the humane society and its this kind of repsonse that makes volunteers believe they and other like them are making a difference. They've saved hundreds of animals over the years, and they do it for nothing. Just the satisfaction that they've made little furry lives a little happier.

"Its just a love of animals" says Clayton.

The humane society dogs will be quarantined for about 3 weeks for observation before being adopted. Anyone who is interested in adopting is asked to call "pick of the litter" at 903-452-5920. Bob Hallmark reporting.
