Dietz Admits He Made Error That Reversed Yates Conviction

A day after Houston mother Andrea Yates had her capital murder convictions overturned, the psychiatrist at the center of the controversy says he made an honest mistake.

Dr. Park Dietz is a well respected expert witness who has helped convict some of the country's most notorious killers, including Jeffrey Dahmer and the Unabomber, but he is now blamed for the reversal of the Yates convictions.

Dietz had testified about an episode of the TV show Law And Order where a woman was acquitted by reason of insanity for drowning her children. No such episode exists.

Andrea Yates drowned three of her five children in the family home in 2001.

Dietz says, despite his mistake, he believes she was not insane when the children were killed.

"The evidence she knew right from wrong is her statements... (it wouldn't make sense) to make up something," Dietz said on Friday morning's Good Morning America.

Dr. Dietz also testified in the trial of Deanna Laney, the Chapel Hill mother found not guilty by reason of insanity for killing her two sons in 2003.
