Gilmer rides record setting offense to state championship game

GILMER, TX (KLTV) - The Gilmer Buckeyes say their unstoppable offense began to click well before high school.

"We were really special when these kids were young," said Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor.  "In junior high they were dynamic."

The Buckeyes offense is more like fantasy.  With 915 points in this season, Gilmer has become the second highest scoring team in the history of Texas High School football. The Buckeyes average 61 points per game.  Seven different Buckeyes have at least seven touchdowns this season, led by Blake Lynch's 34.

"Coach (Jeff Traylor) gives us a good game plan and we have some talented guys," said Lynch.

Quarterback McLane Carter has thrown 46 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

"We have weapons and most of all guys busting their butt up front and on the line," Carter said. "They go hard every play, they don't take a play off."

Head Coach Jeff Traylor believes the Buckeyes offense will face its toughest test of the season Friday afternoon against West Orange-Stark. The Mustangs have given up an average of 8 and half points per game during the playoffs.

"Best defense we've played since Navasota in 2012," said Traylor.  "Very physical and fast. We'll have our hands full."

The Buckeyes believe all the points scored this season are in fact pointless.  The goal was never to set scoring records.  The goal is to win a state championship.

"We grew up waiting for moments like this," said Carter.  "Getting to do it one last time for a state championship is going to be a moment of a lifetime."
