Gilmer continues great play at quarterback

GILMER, TX (KLTV) - Touchdown passes run in McLane Carter's family.  The Gilmer senior quarterback is the little brother of former Buckeye and NFL quarterback G.J. Kinne.

"Any time we have spare time we're out here working," Carter said of his brother.  "He's (Kinne) just a coach. He wants me to be great."

Passing is in Carter's DNA, becoming one of the best quarterbacks in the state.  Carter has thrown 37 touchdowns and just one interception for the 13 and 0 Buckeyes.

"He's one of the best pure passers I've ever had," said Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor.  "The ball always comes off his hand so beautifully. He can throw it effortlessly. We've had a bunch of great quarterbacks, but he's as good of a pure passer."

Scoring 59 points per game, the Buckeyes have made scoring touchdowns look easy.  Nothing came in easy in Gilmer's third round win over Gladewater.

Trailing by 2 points with 69 seconds to play and no timeouts, Carter took the huddle with confidence and led the Buckeyes 83 yards for the game winning score.

"Of all the things I've been proud of about McLane, that was one of the greatest moments for him," said Traylor.  "His calmness and how he executed that one minute drive with no timeouts. He just did a wonderful job moving around the pocket, escaping and getting rid of it when he needed to get rid of it. Just a marvelous job leading his team to a great win."

Carter hopes the incredible finish leads to a state championship.

"We're really close to doing it and we only have three games left," said Carter.  "If we can pull it off, it would be one of those things you'd remember for the rest of your life."
