Union Grove celebrates first outright championship in 46 years

UNION GROVE, TX (KLTV) - It's a great time to be a Union Grove Lion.

"I was filling up at the gas station the other day and all the sudden I hear a bunch of 'UG' chanting," said Union Grove head coach Roger Adams.  "It was school board member and their family running around my truck."

"Little kids come up to me," said Union Grove quarterback Tristen Thompson.  "Saying, 'You're doing so good, are going to win tonight?'"

"Teachers love you more when you're district champs," said Union Grove defensive tackle Garrett Bowery.

"The food here at school tastes better," said Adams.  "And the girls are prettier so we're having a great time."

For the first time since 1968, the Union Grove Lions are outright district champs.  A 10 and 0 record for the first time in nearly five decades.

"I have to be honest," said Thompson.  "I did not see this coming."

Adams saw it coming in 2013, when the Lions made the postseason for the first time in 45 years.

"The big thing the group last year did was get us over the hump to where we believed in ourselves," said Adams.  "That's what I tell the kids that graduated off of last years team, they're a big part because now we believe."

Believe the Lions could put Union Grove football on the map. Hanging playoff banners and district championships.

"The emotions are so much better," said Thompson.  "I think we've really achieved something big this year. We knew what we had to do coming in. We just wanted to keep this thing going and make something big for this community."

"This is a great feeling to be champs," said Bowery.  "It's a great feeling to know we're going to keep going. It ain't going to be over after one round. I want to see how far we can go. We want to win it all."

The Lions have a bye week in the bi-district round.  Union Grove will play the winner of the Lovelady/Kerens game.

Stephen f. Austin head football coach Clint Conque paid a visit to the Rose City this afternoon. It's perfect timing to pump up the program, considering the Jacks are coming off a dramatic last second win over Incarnate Word. Put on by the alumni association, Conque was the featured speaker at a Lumberjack networking event. Coach Conque got to brag a little about SFA's first victory of the year. Not to mention that despite a rough non-conference, the Jacks are 1-0 in South...More >>
