Spring Hill quarterback recovering after brain injury

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Spring Hill senior quarterback Garrett Plumlee is recovering at a Plano hospital Monday, following a life threatening injury during Friday's game against Atlanta.

Spring Hill Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Mark Sartain says Plumlee suffered a concussion following a hard hit. Head Trainer Michael Rich called an ambulance, and en route to the hospital, Plumlee stopped breathing.

"Michael Rich has been a godsend," said Sartain. "Had he delayed his decision, it [would] have been much worse."

Sartain says doctors discovered brain hemorrhaging. Plumlee was flown to Plano.

Sartain says Plumlee was unconscious for nearly 48 hours. Doctors decided against surgery and bleeding to his brain ended Sunday morning.

Plumlee is now breathing on his own and talking.

"I saw him yesterday, and he knew who I was," said Sartain. "He's still got some recovery to make, but we almost lost him."

Plumlee had fought his way back into the lineup for the final game of the season. The senior quarterback broke his leg in the third week and had missed most of the season.
