"Save The Carnegie" Campaign Underway

A fundraising campaign to "Save the Carnegie" is underway.

The Smith County Historical Society says its building is in need of major repairs and renovations. The 100-year-old building used to be the Tyler Public Library. It then became the Carnegie History Museum and Archives.

The campaign chair says they will need half-a-million dollars to save the building and its collection.

"Air conditioning was 50 years old," Ken Barron said. "It was moisture-laden. It was destroying our archives, which includes 100-year-old newspapers and pictures and so forth. Then, in addition to that, we learned we have roof problems."

The historical society is sending out letters to local individuals, businesses, and foundations, asking for donations of $15,000-$50,000. Those principal benefactors will be recognized with a commemorative plaque in the museum. All other donations are also welcome.
