East Texans Replace Gifts Destroyed By Fire

Although no one was injured in last night's fire at Truman W. Smith, there were casualties. Many of the children's presents were damaged.

Tuesday morning a local radio station asked for donations to replace those gifts, and listeners responded immediately. East Texans came from all over to drop off toys, stuffed animals, blankets and even money at the KYKX studio. By 11:00am, the lobby was filled with gifts.

Program director, Dru Laborde says he's never seen anything like it. "We've had anonymous individuals peel off $100 bills in bulk and just handing them to us and walking away. They didn't want any type of identification," says Dru.

There are two banks in Gladewater where monetary donations can be made. The first is the City National Bank. On your check, just write attention Brenda Kaster. Or you can donate through the Taste of the Oil Patch at Texas Bank and Trust, also in Gladewater.

If you'd like to donate a toy in Tyler, drop it off at Heartland Ham at 3400 South Broadway in Tyler. They'll be taking donations tomorrow until noon.
