Better East Texas: Reality shows come with a price for participants

The biggest genre of TV programming during the past 20 years has been the reality show format.

It goes way back with "Survivor," and then came "Dancing With The Stars" and then "The Bachelor" and all the copycats and spinoffs for each.

But some of these shows have come with a huge price and that is the real situations they put real people in. Many of us probably scoff under our breath when we hear of the most recent breakup of the bachelor and his selected fiancee but you really have to feel contempt for the family in the show “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.”

The reality TV show surrounding their family, with Mama June, Honey Boo Boo and the others, has come apart and the children may be caught in the middle. June Shannon, also known as Mama June, is now separated from her significant other and there are reports that she is dating a convicted child molester.

In any case, there is concern for the children's safety through all this. There have been other tragedies with contestants and other participants in these shows. Some might say, “That is why they call it reality TV.” I would suggest that the cameras, in some cases, added to the pressure and ultimately took away the reality part of the show. These shows are cheap to produce because there is very little scripting but they do cost something when it comes to the price participants pay with their well-being.

We can do without the reality shows that cause already troubled situations to be magnified and that will make for a Better East Texas.
