Gilmer Fans Welcome Home Newest State Champions

The Gilmer Buckeyes brought back East Texas' 3rd State Title Saturday with a down to the wire win over Jasper.  The victory caps off a perfect 16-0 season for black and orange and gives the school it's first ever state title.

KLTV 7 was there as the Buckeye faithful welcomed home their team.  Dozens of Gilmer fans braved the cold weather and the late night, to give their Buckeyes a champions welcome.

"It was real sweet, we've needed one here for awhile, we've needed one here for quite awhile but they've got it now and let them have their glory," said fan Justin Goolsby.

"Our Buckeye boys did pull through and we did win it and we've got a State Championship," said fan Keshia Johnson.

It was after Midnight when the team finally arrived back in Gilmer following their victory over Jasper in the Class 3A, Division II State Final.  The win marks the school's first ever football state championship.  For buckeye players this final win is a fitting end to what they say has been a magical season.

"It feels great, real great.. we've been waiting for four years now and we finally got there," said Roderick McKnight.

"We always said we could do it and we put our minds to it and we succeeded," said Jeremy Skinner.

For Buckeye fans it's a night that will live on forever.

The Gilmer Buckeyes are one of three East Texas teams to win a state title this year.  They finished the season a perfect 16-0.
