Nearly Half Of Gilmer Turns Out To Cheer For Buckeyes

Nearly half of Gilmer packed the high school's new gym.

"Go, Buckeyes! Win, Buckeyes!" fans yelled.

"They're the best team in Texas," Helen Johnson, the proud grandmother of Quarterback Manuel Johnson, said.

"Oh, it's just wonderful to have the fans out there, pumping us up in a community pep rally," Roderick McKnight, Buckeye defensive tackle, said. "You know, the fans are behind us. They're going to be there no matter what."

The players said there's no question the Bucks will win.

The school and the community have just as much faith. And tonight, they showed their spirit through music, dance, and cheers.

"I hereby proclaim December 18, 2004 as Gilmer Buckeye Football Day in Upshur County, TX," Upshur County Judge Dean Fowler said.

Some former Buckeyes had a message for the seniors: Bring home the state ring because it's their last chance.
