Local Store Cranks Out Buckeye Gear

Right smack in the middle of downtown is a little store that sells all things Buckeye.

Special Tees owner, Becky Burns, is cranking out team gear to meet the ever-growing demand. Not only are they getting busier filling holiday gift orders, but with the Buckeyes doing so well, the ladies are working overtime.

"I'm up here sometimes 'til 1 or 2 in the morning, screenprinting at night, trying to get the orders out in time," Burns said.

Customers have come in each week looking for new merchandise as the season progresses.

"We started out with the 'Gilmer Buckeyes, A Championship Tradition' 'cause we had won the past three district titles," Jackie Low, a sales associate, said. "And we knew we were going to have a winning season."

After the "State Playoffs" shirt, came the "State-Bound" one, which went on sale before the Buckeyes even won the semifinals.

"Yes, because we knew," Low said. "We had confidence in our team."

But you won't be seeing "State Champion" shirts here until the team actually wins. Burns doesn't want to jinx them, so to speak.

If you stay in the store long enough, you could come out looking like a true Buckeye fan: balloons, a hat, tote bag, pom poms, a foam hand, a blanket for those cold nights, and even some sweet things to munch on, like lollipops and peppermint spirit sticks.

Come Saturday, don't expect to make last-minute purchases.

"Everybody in the town just shuts down and goes and supports the Buckeyes," Low said.

Thursday night, Gilmer High School is holding a citywide pep rally at 7 p.m. in the New Gym. The game is Saturday at 5 p.m. at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. The Buckeyes will play the Jasper Bulldogs for the state title.
