Freedom Fighters: Juan Nichols

Juan Nichols joined the Navy in January of 1951. By September of that year, he was on his way to North Korea aboard the U.S.S. Doyle, a World War Two Destroyer converted into a mine sweeper.

The Doyle's day job was sweeping mines from the Korean coastline. At night, it would run the shore line firing at designated targets. In winter, temperatures dipped as low as 140 degrees below zero, every bit as deadly as Korean bullets.
