TYLER - The ETMC Cancer Institute is now offering a low-dose CT scan for only $150 to screen for lung cancer in smokers.
Patients must meet these criteria:
- You are 55 to 74 years old and you smoke now or quit less than 15 years ago.
- And you've smoked one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years.
The test is a CT scan with no IV contract using a new low-dose scanner. It takes less than 10 minutes.
"Detecting lung cancer early and treating it surgically has been shown to improve the five-year survival rate to higher than 70 percent (the rate is 15 percent when detected late)," according to Dianne Adelfio, vice president of the ETMC Cancer Institute. "Next to quitting smoking, it's the best way to improve your survival rate."
