Kilgore Seniors Have Had Long Term Goal

It's a funny thing about the Kilgore Bulldogs. They have stormed through the season, unblemished.  The first time in school history. The most successfull season the program has ever seen.  Every step of the way, they've found a way to win, and when you ask the seniors, "when did you know you could go all they way?", they all give the same answer.   Not after the win over rival Jacksonville, or even the overtime win over Marshall five weeks earlier.  In fact, it wasn't even during fall practice.

 "7th grade," they answer.

That's right... 7th grade. Undefeated as 8th graders. Undeafeated as freshmen. You take their best players to the varsity as sophomores and they lose just once. As juniors, they lost just once, and back as the dominant seniors, undefeated once again.

"Sometimes you just have that chemistery," said senior center Billy Slagle, "and we got that bug of just liking to win and so it just kind of became a week by week thing that we weren't going to lose and it's gone on and we've gotten so much closer that now it's kind of a personal thing. If the guy next to us isn't getting the job done or we're not getting the job done, it's become a community effort and so winning has sort of become epected."

"One of the key things is we're always hanging out together," said senior wr/db Trey Sands.  "I mean, on and off the football field we're always together."

"You know we don't have any real big time players, Keith Gilliam, yeah he is," said senior kicker Rudy Galvan, "but our bond, no one can really break that apart. That's what's so good about this team."

Having watched them now for six years, head coach Mike Vallery knows this team has that special something needed to win a Texas state football title.

"We've said for a long time we'd love to get this football team and this community to get a taste of that and see what it's like," said Vallery, "and I think our community is ready to get a taste of it, but we've got to go out and play some good football in front of us."

The Bulldogs play Pflugerville Connally Saturday at 2:00 at Birdville ISD Stadium.
