Proud Of East Texas: Author Jan Statman

Few East Texans alive today realize how the great East Texas oil boom shaped our area and our lives. That's why author Jan Statman recorded the stories of twenty-four people who lived the oil boom days in her book Raisins and Almonds and Texas Oil.

In May of 1929, oil was discovered in East Texas, changing the easy going rural life of the area forever. People descended on East Texas from throughout the depression-ridden nation, looking for jobs.

A veteran writer with numerous published credits, Statman writes about Jewish life in the east Texas oil fields. The book's title 'raisins and almonds' is taken from an old Yiddish lullaby where raisins and almonds were the ultimate treat one could dream of. Jewish settlers, like others flocking to East Texas, found jobs to feed their families.

Some made fortunes, some lost them. It was a time like no other, before or since. Statman is pleased that people from all over can know about the special men and women who made East Texas what it is today.
