Annual Turkey Toss In Hughes Springs

Thanksgiving is known as "turkey" day, but some East Texans aren't done with the bird just yet. This Christmas season, instead of eating a turkey... Some are tossing them. Why? well, here's the history. In the 1930's and 40's a man named J.W. Reeder showed his charity to the community of Hughes spring, by throwing "live turkeys" to neighbors from the balcony of his funeral home, which is now a restaurant.

Today his granddaughter "Betsy" revived the custom by throwing "stuffed" toy turkeys to a crowd standing outside the same building. The turkeys were redeemable for prises and "real" turkeys.
