KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Kilgore police are investigating a case of animal cruelty after they say a dog was found suffering from gunshot wounds and on the verge of death.

"He was all skin and bones when he was found," Kilgore Police Department said in a Facebook statement.

Police say the dog, Mr. Bones, was shot twice with what appears to be some type of bird shot.

"Even though Mr. Bones was suffering, he showed signs of being a loving dog with an indomitable spirit," said the statement. "He clearly expressed his gratefulness at being saved."

According to the statement, Mr. Bones was taken to vet and is now with a foster family. Mr. Bones lost a leg, but police say he's recovering well and may be adopted soon.

Kilgore PD says Mr. Bones suffered from gunshot wounds for two weeks before they were notified. They remind the community to notify animal control is strays are spotted in their neighborhood.

They ask that anyone with information about Mr. Bones and how he was shot contact Kilgore Police Detective Tim Dukes at 903-218-6904.
