Adjustments on Gamecocks' offensive line could be key vs. East Carolina

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The letdown the Gamecocks experienced last week was one that lingered for a while with fans.

South Carolina offensive line coach Shawn Elliott knows that. This week, he and the rest of the Gamecocks look to shake off that letdown at 7 p.m. on Saturday when they host East Carolina.

"It was a very disappointing outing for us," Elliott said "It gets your attention, but we faced a very good football team. They came out well-prepared and took it to us. We expect the same thing from East Carolina this week. We have to hone in on some of the skills that we've set throughout the course of camp and bring them out on game day. We've got another opportunity. No one game makes or breaks a football season."

Head coach Steve Spurrier hinted at a few changes to be made heading into their second contest. One of those changes could see Alan Knott getting the start at center. The redshirt freshman has been getting reps with the first-team offense this week over Clayton Stadnik. However, there is no guarantee that Knott will get the starting nod against the Pirates.

"I'm not 100 percent sure yet (on who would start at center), but Alan Knott has had a good week of practice," said Elliott. "These guys all work hard. They all deserve a chance to get in there and show what they can do."

Offensive line play will be key as the Gamecocks look to revive their running game. South Carolina only tallied 67 yards on the ground against Texas A&M. This week, they'll look to improve on that mark.

"We've put a little more emphasis on (the running game). We had some opportunities to run the football last week. It just didn't work out. We've got some backs that want to run it. We've got some lineman that want to block for it. We'll see how it pans out on Saturday."
