Hogg Middle School closed on Wednesday after a small electrical fire in the server room. Classes at the school will resume as usual on Thursday.

Officials tell us the fire happened on the second floor of the school, in the server room. District officials say their server room is filled with computers that work as a data center for the entire campus, but the fire this morning started with a power strip.

Tyler Independent School District Communications Director Dawn Parnell says the power strip had an electrical shortage, causing the fire. Parnell says the fire was contained fairly quickly, but they shut the school down immediately to ensure the safety of all students.

“As a result there was quite a bit of smoke and we just felt like it was in the best interest of the students and staff to go ahead and close school for the day so we could make sure the problem was resolved," said Parnell.

The fire only caused minor damage inside the server room.

Hogg Middle School was opened 84 years ago this month. The district said the age of the building didn't have anything to do with the fire.

Students or parents with further questions are asked to call the Hogg Middle School front office at 903-262-1500.
