Governor Perry Grants Reprieve

Governor Rick Perry granted a reprieve for a woman convicted of murdering her husband and two children.

Frances Newton was scheduled to be executed last night for those killings. Yesterday, Governor Perry accepted a recommendation from the Board of Pardons and Paroles that the execution should be put off for 120 days to allow for further review of her case.

Had Newton's execution gone through, Newton would have been the first black woman and only the fourth woman to be put to death in Texas since the Civil War.
