TITUS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A long-time Titus County constable has died following a wreck in Mt. Pleasant Thursday morning.

Precinct 2 Cleve Johnson, 57, was driving in his patrol car on FM 1734 just before 10 a.m. when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a concrete culvert, according to a trooper with the Department of Public Safety.
Titus county constable Cleve Johnson was killed instantly.

Family and colleagues say that constable Johnson personified what it meant to be in law enforcement.

Johnson had a home spun country charm that friends remember well.

"He had that distinct voice where whenever he walked into a building everybody knew it was Cleve; he was always a character you might say. Me being a young rookie deputy, he took me under his wing. showed me how to work cases," says Lieutenant Chris Bragg of the Titus county Sheriff's Office.

"I was sitting in my dispatch when I heard the call. I got a call from one of my deputies telling me it was Cleve, and he didn't make it," says Titus County Sheriff Tim Ingram.

Ingram was not only a long time friend but also Johnson's next door neighbor for 15 years.

"If you really got to know Cleve and got to know what kind of person he was, you couldn't help but love him," Tim says.

A familiar face around Mount Pleasant, many who knew him say he had a remarkable talent for treating all people fairly. Law-abiding citizens and those with criminal records alike.

"I would say to him, why were you so nice that guy, he's a crook he's on the wrong side of the law? And Cleve was like 'Well, he is a crook, he is on the wrong side of the law, but one day he might be on the right side one day and i don't want to be a hindrance to that," Bragg says.

He worked for Mount Pleasant police, Titus County Sheriff's Office and the constable's office, and even when he left to work for another company, he couldn't stay away from law enforcement.

"Cleve loved the people. Which in turn, he loved the work, he was there to serve,  he was one of the best," says Johnson's brother-in-law Steve Agan.

Johnson had 34 combined years of service with law enforcement in Titus County. He had served as constable since January 1997.

Cleve Johnson was 57. Funeral services are pending

DPS is investigating the wreck.
