TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Tyler's Caldwell Zoo is holding a special viewing for a it's latest addition - a baby giraffe named Knox.

The giraffe, born Aug. 15, will be visible in the giraffe building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday through Monday.

Baby Knox - standing 5 and half feet tall and weighing 112 pounds - is the son of Cricket and Ramses. Cricket carried the newborn for 14 to 15 months. The baby and mother are very close, zoo staff said, and Knox follows his mother everywhere. He's also fond of chewing on everything.

Zookeepers are working to get Knox used to his surroundings and the day's activities. He is staying inside the giraffe building, but soon he will be introduced to the outdoor holding areas and then to the giraffes' outdoor yard.

Caldwell Zoo saw its first giraffe arrive in 1978. Since first housing giraffes, there have been 26 babies born. The last giraffe baby, Gus, is now at the zoo in Philadelphia and is father to a little girl.

The zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquarium's Reticulated Giraffe Species Survival Program, which is a cooperative breeding program among AZA accredited institutions created for the purpose of ensuring the survival of species in need on conservation efforts.

Caldwell Zoo is at 2203 Martin Luther King Blvd. To contact the zoo, call 903-593-0121.
