OMAHA, NE (KMTV/CNN) - A crew member for the Cops reality TV show was fatally shot during taping of a police response Tuesday night.

The man was identified as 38-year-old Bryce Dion during a news conference on Wednesday. He was a sound technician for the long-running program.

Officers responded to an armed robbery at a Wendy's restaurant, and Dion was hit during a gun battle between police and the suspect.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said said the suspect, 32-year-old Cortez Washington, was holding an Airsoft rifle that police mistook for a deadly firearm. Airsoft guns resemble real guns in many ways, but they fire plastic pellets.

Police shot Washington, and both he and Dion were declared dead at University of Nebraska Medical Center.
