Tatum & Gilmer Eager For Playoff Rematch

It was one year ago the last time Tatum and Gilmer met on the football field. The Buckeyes won the regional playoff game over the Eagles, 35 to 27. Now with a date in the state quarterfinals, you can bet the Tatum Eagles are looking forward to the rematch.

"Tatum's made it well known," Gilmer coach Jeff Traylor says, "they want revenge on Gilmer for beating them last year. They want to play us again."

The Gilmer Buckeyes are undefeated and state ranked again. Coach Traylor says they want to be one of those East Texas playoff powers.

"I don't think we're in that league yet," he says. "We've been in the playoffs four years, Tatum's been there for fifteen. We're trying to get in there."

For the Tatum Eagles, this year's fourth round appearance is their deepest run since they played for the state championship in 1996. And it's another chance for Stephen Hodge and company to claim what coach Andy Evans says is the toughest region in the state.

"One thing I've noticed," Evans says, "is every team has got great athletes. There are no easy games or teams anywhere."

With marquee stars on both sides of the ball, Saturday's game is one last chance to claim bragging rights, and represent East Texas in the 3A Final Four.

After the morning talk the two would leave the AC cooled office and venture into the heat to look for an apartment. Five years ago, Arledge would have never thought his life would bring him to Lufkin.
