Tyler Junior College to use three quarterbacks in season opener

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - You often hear the expression, if a team has two quarterbacks, they don't have any. Well, what if the team has three? That's the story at Tyler Junior College.

After taking all of the first team reps during spring practice, quarterback Matt Davis left Tyler Junior college for SMU in May. "I wish the best for Matt Davis, but we have a lot of good quarterbacks now so we will just live with what we got," sophomore defensive lineman Mote Maile said.

What the Apaches have are three options in Max Staver, Tevin Muse, and Sederian Copeland. All three quarterbacks will play in Saturday's opener against Trinity Valley. "Usually when somebody says they are going to play three quarterbacks that means they dont have one, but all three of these guys have abilities that will help the football team," head coach Danny Palmer said.

Sophomore wide receiver Willie Robinson added, "He can probably put all three in there that can go to work. So when it comes down to it we can put one in there, he can come and do his thing. I am confident in all of them."

Staver will start the game for the Apaches and despite coming to the program during summer workouts, he has already established himself as a the teams leader. "Max brings a smartness," Robinson said. "He can come in and run the offense. He can bring it, he can bring it. He is a competitor, he never gives up."

Staver added, "That's part of being a leader. It's accepting the job having to perform everyday and having the courage to do that while everybody is looking at you.

A former Florida Gator, Staver is a Division I talent. But in order to play like it on Saturday's and throw the ball like he's capable, Max must develop timing with his receivers. "You know I set high goals for myself," Staver said. "Obviously I am not there yet and I have a lot of work to do, but I feel like as a team and offense we are progressing."

Starting off with the conference favorite Cardinals, we will see real quick what TJC will have a quarterback this season.
