TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas soldier returning from Afghanistan was welcomed home Tuesday morning.

Dozens gathered at Tyler Pounds Regional airport to greet Sergeant First Class Rodney Eubanks as he walked into the terminal.

"I was expecting to see my mom and my wife, and that was about it," Eubanks said, "and then I saw the patriot guard and flags, and was like, somebody did something."

Eubanks said he was up nearly 24 hours traveling before finally landing in Tyler, and  now that he's home and retiring, he looks forward to going to work as a civilian; "If anybody's looking to hire a veteran, I have a lot of skills."

Elaine Eubanks said she was excited for her son to be home, but even more that he'll be staying around.

"This is the first time he's lived in my town in thirty years probably, and he's gonna live right across the street," Eubanks said.

Eubanks added that his first stop after the airport would be lunch at Whataburger, then to pick up his son from kindergarten. "I think it will be a tearful moment," Eubanks said about picking his son up from school.

Eubanks joined the Army in 1991, and most recently served in Afghanistan, where he was an airborne ranger.
