SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A Smith County bridge still isn't open to the public, even though it was supposed to be finished by June.

The bridge is in southeastern Smith County on County Road 1141. It crosses Indian Creek and some railroad tracks near Toll 49. It looks like a perfectly good bridge, but it's still closed. There's a holdup because the county says both they and TxDOT aren't satisfied with the contractor's work yet.

The county says some aspects of the project need attention or even correction. Smith County Officials and a TxDOT representative went to the bridge two weeks ago with the contractor and made a list of things that need to be done before they'll sign off on the work. Even though the bridge may look completed, vehicles are bypassing the "road closed" signs and that's irritating the people who live nearby.

Residents say they're upset the bridge doesn't have the same charm the old bridge had. The homeowners living closest to the bridge also say the construction and constant u-turns from through traffic has put wear on their yard and left clutter and damage to their driveway. The bridge project has taken about three months longer than expected. Smith County says the bridge should open again in September.
