CHIRENO, TX (KTRE) - A 46-year-old Cushing man is in custody after he allegedly robbed the Capital One Bank in Chireno shortly before noon Monday.

According to a press release, deputies from the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office and the Precinct 4 Constable's Office were dispatched to the Capital One bank in Chireno in reference to a bank robbery.

The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction in a blue car. However, deputies were able to get a partial license plate number, and it was given out to law enforcement agencies in surrounding counties.

Shortly after deputies started processing the crime scene, an officer with the San Augustine Police Department spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one used in the robbery. The officer tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused, turned on to Highway 96, and continued at a high rate of speed into Shelby County.

The Center Police Department, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety joined in the high-speed chase. The pursuing law enforcement officers finally stopped the vehicle near Tenaha.

According to the press release, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Michael Garrett. Evidence found inside the vehicle, including money taken from the bank and clothing used during the robbery were allegedly found inside his vehicle.

The FBI and Texas Ranger Brian Travis Brazil went to Shelby County and interviewed Garrett, who allegedly admitted to the robbery.

Investigators with the NCSO have obtained a warrant for aggravated robbery for Garrett. Garrett is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail on an evading arrest charge.

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges said surveillance camera video footage from the bank showed Garrett approaching the teller. In the video, Garrett showed the teller a note that demanded money.

Octavio Cortes was delivering products to the bank and said the scene was chaotic outside.
"They didn't let me in," Cortes said. "The doors were locked. They were yelling, 'he went that way, he went that way.'"

Cortes said something did not seem right as he pulled into the parking lot.

"It was a bright blue, Chrysler sebring," Cortes said. "It just stuck out like a sore thumb here."

Bridges said that it appeared that Garrett was armed when he made it to the teller.

“Garrett had his hand in his pocket during this time and acted as though he had a weapon while demanding money,” Bridges said..
