(KLTV) -

As we venture into the next several days, we are watching an area of low pressure that has formed in the northern Gulf of Mexico, a few hundred miles south of New Orleans.

This low is expected to slowly move toward the west, increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms along the Gulf Coast region of Louisiana through tomorrow, then increasing the chances along the central Texas and Louisiana coastal areas for Wednesday and Thursday.

We will have to keep a close eye on this area of low pressure because it is far enough offshore and the waters of the Gulf of Mexico are warm enough for something tropical in nature to form - a tropical depression or even a tropical storm - later in the week.

We are watching it closely and the National Hurricane Center is monitoring it as well.

Further updates on this system will be available on East Texas News at 4 and 5 as well as KLTV-7 News at 6 and 10.
