Longview police, fire departments to host National Night Out kickoff

Longview police and fire departments are planning a kickoff for National Night Out on Sept. 9 at Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex.

The event is from 6 to 8 p.m. and will feature local heroes from both departments. NNO kits will be distributed to groups planning to host parties in October. Attendees are encouraged to dress up as their favorite hero.

Food, games, prizes, child ID, and photo opportunities with local heroes will also be available.

National Night Out began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities and foster police-community partnerships, according to the National Association of Town Watch. In Texas, the event is held the first Tuesday in October. The event now involves more than 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities across the country, territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide, according to the NATW website.
